Chamba has very few de-addiction beds of its own, so this list covers the five best nasha mukti kendra options a Chamba family can actually reach: one inside Chamba town, and four within a few hours' drive. Every one is verifiable. Here they are first, details below.
| # | Centre | Where | Cost per month | Admission |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | GMC Chamba, Psychiatry OPD | Chamba town | Free or nominal | OPD within days, no rehab beds |
| 2 | Eshan Charitable Trust | Tanda Kholi, Kangra | ₹12,500 to ₹40,000 | Usually 1 to 2 days |
| 3 | IRCA Nurpur, Red Cross | Nurpur, Kangra | Free or nominal | Subject to a free bed |
| 4 | Naya Savera | Sullah Road, Kangra | Call for fees | Call to confirm |
| 5 | Prayas Bhawan, Dharamshala | Dharamshala, Kangra | Free or nominal | Subject to a free bed |
Honest note first. This list is published by Eshan Charitable Trust and we have put ourselves on it, at number 2. We are a registered charitable trust in Kangra district, not a Chamba address and not a government centre, and we say so plainly. Fees, beds and timings change, so please ring any centre before you travel.
1. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba
GMC Chamba, Department of Psychiatry
Akhand Chandi Mohalla, Darobhi, Chamba 176310
- Cost
- Free or nominal
- Type
- Government OPD
- Distance
- In Chamba town
This is the first place a Chamba family should go, and it is right there in town. The medical college runs a Psychiatry department, so a qualified doctor can assess the person, start medication for withdrawal, treat the depression or anxiety sitting underneath the addiction, and refer onward if a residential bed is needed.
Under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, medicines on the essential drug list are free at government mental health establishments, and families below the poverty line, destitute or homeless are entitled to free treatment even without a BPL card. The hospital's listed OPD timing is Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm.
What it does not have is a residential rehabilitation ward. It can get him stable and medicated, but the months of counselling and routine after detox have to happen somewhere else. That is the gap the rest of this list fills.
Good fit if: money is the main barrier, or you need a doctor to see him this week before deciding anything.
2. Eshan Charitable Trust, the Nearest Full Residential Programme
Eshan Charitable Trust, De-Addiction & Rehabilitation Centre
Near FCI Godown, Village Tanda Kholi, Ward No. 7, PO Kholi, Tehsil and District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh 176001
- Cost
- ₹12,500 to ₹40,000
- Admission
- Usually 1 to 2 days
- Programme
- 180 days, 8 stages
We take families from Chamba town, Bharmour, Dalhousie, Banikhet, Chuwari, Tissa, Salooni and Churah every month, which is why we are on this list. The drive is roughly four to five hours via Chamba, Banikhet and Nurpur, and it is a road most Chamba families already know.
Eshan Charitable Trust is a registered charitable trust, not a business and not a government centre. It was set up by Eshan Pathania, five years in recovery himself, after watching Himachali families sell land or take loans for rehab fees. The rule here is simple: psychiatrist-led treatment at a fee an ordinary family can actually pay, stated openly on the first phone call.
- Registered with the HP State Mental Health Authority, Shimla: Provisional Registration Sr. No. 193, under Sections 66(4) and 66(11) of the Mental Healthcare Act 2017, issued 14/05/2026. The certificate can be inspected at the centre.
- Registered charitable trust, Regd. No. 2025/19/IV/123.
- Medically supervised detox, then a 180 day residential programme in eight stages.
- Team: psychologist, MSW counsellors, pharmacist, staff nurse, yoga and wellness instructor, vocational trainer.
- Daily one to one counselling, group therapy, morning yoga, family counselling and aftercare follow-up.
- No beating, no chains, no locked rooms, no forced pick-up. Families are encouraged to visit.
- Close to Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, which matters if a medical complication comes up.
Treats chitta (चिट्टा), heroin, smack, brown sugar, sharab (शराब), charas (चरस), ganja, bhang (भांग), opium, doda, bhukki, tramadol, codeine syrup, alprazolam, cocaine, MDMA, injecting use and mixed use. Residential, men only, 18 and above, no upper age limit.
Good fit if: he has agreed today and may change his mind tomorrow, or he has already relapsed after a short stay somewhere and needs a proper long programme. Call us even if you only want to ask questions. If ₹12,500 is out of reach, say so honestly and we reduce fees where we genuinely can.
3. IRCA Nurpur Drug De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre
IRCA Nurpur, run by the District Red Cross Society, Kangra
Near Civil Hospital, Nurpur Chowgan, Tehsil Nurpur, District Kangra
- Cost
- Free or nominal
- Beds
- 15 on the state register
- Running since
- 2017
This is the closest free residential de-addiction centre to Chamba, and it sits on the road Chamba families already travel. It is an Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts, the model the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment funds under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction, where in-patient treatment, stay and food are provided free of cost.
It is on the Himachal Pradesh State Mental Health Authority register under Regd. No. 93, listed with 15 beds, registered on 1 October 2021. The Red Cross says admitted patients are treated under specialist doctors, counsellors and trained staff, with yoga, meditation, and individual, group and family counselling.
The honest limitation is capacity. The Tribune has reported that this centre lacked an adequate number of beds and staff, and that families were therefore turning to private centres elsewhere. Most of its inmates have come from Chamba, Hamirpur and the Dehra side of Kangra, which tells you how much Chamba leans on it. Ring first and ask whether a bed is free this week.
Good fit if: you cannot pay anything and you are able to wait for a bed to open up.
4. Naya Savera Drug De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre
Naya Savera, Kangra district
VPO Bhattu Samula, near Naalti Pul, Sullah Road, District Kangra
- Cost
- Call for fees
- Type
- Private residential
- Approach
- 12 step based
A long-running private residential centre on the Palampur side of Kangra district, further from Chamba than the others on this list but worth knowing if you want a second private option to compare against. Listed services include detox and withdrawal management, residential rehabilitation, twelve step work with AA and NA meetings, substance abuse counselling, family services and relapse prevention.
Fees are not published, so you will have to call and ask for them in writing. Ask for the registration number under the Mental Healthcare Act too, and check it with the state authority in Shimla, the same as you would with any centre including ours.
Good fit if: you want a twelve step based private programme and you are comparing two or three private centres before deciding.
5. District De-Addiction Centre, Prayas Bhawan, Dharamshala
District De-Addiction Centre, run by the District Red Cross Society, Kangra
Prayas Bhawan, Dharamshala, District Kangra 176215
- Cost
- Free or nominal
- Beds
- 15 on the state register
- Running since
- November 2025
The newest of the free options, operating at Prayas Bhawan in Dharamshala since November 2025. The Red Cross Society secretary has said patients are treated under specialist doctors, counsellors and trained staff, with yoga, meditation, educational sessions, and individual, group and family counselling to help people reintegrate socially.
It appears on the state mental health authority register under Regd. No. 70 with 15 beds. For a Chamba family it is a longer drive than Nurpur, but it is a genuine second free option if Nurpur has no bed, and Dharamshala is easier to reach by bus.
Good fit if: Nurpur is full and you still need a free residential bed.
Why Chamba Families End Up Travelling
Not because Chamba is being ignored, but because the residential beds are not built yet. As of August 2026 the state government's own position was that four de-addiction and rehabilitation centres for men are running in Himachal, in Kullu, Una, Hamirpur and Kangra, with five more being established, in Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Solan and Sirmaur. Chamba's is in that second list.
On the ground, the Chamba Deputy Commissioner in September 2025 ordered repairs to the proposed de-addiction centre building in Bhattiyat subdivision. So the building exists and the intent is there, but a Chamba family needing a bed this month still has to look outside the district.

A lot of pages that rank for Chamba are directory listings or call-centre numbers for centres hundreds of kilometres away in Punjab, Haryana or Delhi, with no premises in Himachal at all. Before you send money or put someone in a vehicle, ask for the full street address, the Mental Healthcare Act registration number, and the name of the psychiatrist. Then check the address on a map. A centre that will not give you those three things in writing is not worth the risk.
Chamba on the Map and How Far Each Centre Is
If you have been typing "nasha mukti kendra near me" from a phone in Chamba, this section is the honest answer to what "near" means here. Chamba town sits at the top of the district, and the main road out runs through Banikhet and Dalhousie towards Nurpur and the Kangra valley. That is why every residential option on this list lies along the same route.
| From Chamba town to | Road distance | Rough driving time |
|---|---|---|
| GMC Chamba | In town | Minutes |
| IRCA Nurpur, Red Cross | About 100 km | 3 to 4 hours |
| Prayas Bhawan, Dharamshala | About 115 km | 4 hours |
| Eshan Charitable Trust, Tanda Kholi | About 130 km | 4 to 5 hours |
| Naya Savera, Sullah Road | About 160 km | 5 hours |
Families coming to us from Chamba usually drive down via Banikhet and Nurpur, or take a bus to Kangra and a short local ride from there. Call us before you set out and we will tell you exactly where to turn off and whether a bed is ready, so nobody makes that journey for nothing.
An 8 Point Check Before You Admit Anyone, Anywhere
Use this on every centre on this list, including ours. It takes twenty minutes and it is the single most useful thing a family can do.
- A Mental Healthcare Act registration certificate you can see, with a number you can note down and check with the state authority in Shimla
- A named psychiatrist or medical officer who reviews residents, and a doctor reachable in an emergency
- Medically supervised detox, not withdrawal left to run its course in a locked room
- Trained staff: a psychologist, counsellors, a nurse, a pharmacist
- Fees in writing before admission, stating what is included and what is not
- A clear programme length and a written treatment plan, not a vague "jitne din lagein"
- Family counselling, and a stated policy on visits and phone calls
- Aftercare and follow-up once he comes home, because that is when relapse happens
Walk away if you see these
- A promise of a 100 per cent cure or a quoted success rate
- An offer to collect a grown man by force, with a vehicle and staff
- No doctor or psychiatrist named anywhere
- Refusal to show the registration certificate
- Families never allowed to visit or call
- Cash only, no receipts
- Any sign of chains, locked rooms or beatings
Forced admission is not treatment. Under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, admission is normally voluntary, and admission without consent is allowed only in limited situations after assessment by qualified mental health professionals. Our longer guide on choosing the best rehabilitation centre in Himachal Pradesh goes through each of these checks in detail.
What a Nasha Mukti Kendra Costs Around Chamba
There is no regulated price in Himachal. These are the real bands, so you know when a quote is reasonable and when it is not.

| Red Cross or IRCA centre | Free or nominal | Detox, stay, food, counselling, usually a short stay |

Free Helplines a Chamba Family Should Save Today
| Number or service | What it is for |
|---|---|
| 14446 | National toll-free de-addiction helpline under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, for counselling and referral |
| 14416 or 1-800-891-4416 | Tele MANAS: free 24x7 mental health support from the Government of India, in your own language |
| 112 | Emergency response for police, fire and ambulance |
| 108 | Ambulance for medical emergencies, including an overdose |
| 1933 | MANAS helpline of the Narcotics Control Bureau, to report drug trafficking |
| Drug Free Himachal app | Himachal Police app to report drug selling without revealing your name |
If this is an overdose happening right now, stop reading. The World Health Organization says an opioid overdose shows three signs together:
Call 108 or 112 immediately, turn him on his side if he is breathing, and stay with him. Our guide for families on what to do when someone at home is using chitta has the full steps.
What Has Actually Happened in Chamba, With Dates
- 17 January 2021The Himachal Pradesh Nasha Nivaran Board says de-addiction centres will open in six districts including Chamba, and the then Deputy Commissioner confirms the process is underway, The Tribune reports.
- 28 September 2025Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal chairs a Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan review in Chamba, orders officers to identify drug hotspots, sets up a committee under ASP Hitesh Lakhanpal, plans to train teachers in all government senior secondary schools, and orders repairs to the proposed de-addiction centre building in Bhattiyat subdivision, The Tribune reports.
- 20 August 2026Chamba Municipal Council meets on chitta and youth addiction, agreeing to monitor the town, run awareness drives for parents and young people, and ask residents to report drug selling, The Newz Radar reports.
- 26 August 2026At a Nasha Mukti Mitra training at the Chamba district headquarters, DC Mukesh Repswal describes addiction as a treatable health issue, urges parents to keep talking to their children and arrange timely treatment, and asks people to stop filming and posting videos of addicted youth, The Newz Radar reports.
- August 2026The Social Justice and Empowerment Minister confirms four de-addiction and rehabilitation centres for men are operating, in Kullu, Una, Hamirpur and Kangra, with five more being established including Chamba, Himachal Headlines reports.
The direction of travel is good. The practical point for a family reading this today is that the Chamba centre is not open yet, so the five options above are what you have.
Myths Versus Truth
Myth: "There is a big nasha mukti kendra right here in Chamba, I saw it online."
Check the street address on a map before you believe it. Many pages ranking for Chamba are directories or call centres for facilities in other states. Chamba's own government de-addiction centre is still being established.
Myth: "Government centres are useless."
Not true. GMC Chamba has a Psychiatry department with qualified doctors and free essential medicines. The real limit is residential beds, not the quality of the doctors.
Myth: "Costly means better."
Costly means costly. Some expensive centres have no psychiatrist on record. Judge any centre by its registration, its staff and its programme.
Myth: "Fifteen days is enough."
Fifteen days covers detox. The habits, friendships and triggers built over years take months, which is why proper programmes run far longer.
Myth: "He has to want it himself first."
Many people arrive unwilling and change their minds in the first fortnight once the withdrawal is handled and nobody is shouting at them. Start the conversation anyway.
Myth: "Everyone in Chamba will find out."
Confidentiality is a right under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, at government and registered private centres alike. Ask any centre to explain its confidentiality policy before you admit anyone.
About Eshan Charitable Trust
Eshan Pathania, Founder and Managing Trustee
Why the fees are what they are
Eshan Pathania has been in recovery for five years. What he kept seeing across Himachal was families selling land or taking loans to pay private rehab fees, or sending sons to unsafe centres with no doctor, where people were locked up and beaten.
So he set this up as a registered charitable trust rather than a business, with one rule: proper psychiatrist-led treatment at a fee an ordinary Himachali family can pay. Not cheap care. Real care, made affordable. The fees are published below so you can compare them against anybody.
| Plan | Room and diet | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Shared Residential Care | Shared room, standard diet | ₹12,500 per month |
| B Caring | Deluxe room, twin sharing, upgraded diet | ₹25,000 per month |
| A Caring | Private room, single occupancy, upgraded diet | ₹40,000 per month |
| Medically supervised detox | Once, at admission | ₹6,000 one time |
The treatment is identical in every plan. Only the room and the diet change. Every plan includes accommodation and meals, prescribed medicines, doctor and psychiatrist reviews, counselling, group therapy, yoga, fitness, all activities and family counselling. Anything outside the centre, such as a hospital referral or transport, is discussed with the family first.
If you want to know what the days actually look like before you commit, read what happens in a rehab centre and our page on de-addiction treatment. Families dealing with drinking should read alcohol addiction recovery, and anyone trying to stop chitta can start with chitta kaise chhode.
Questions Chamba Families Ask
Which is the best nasha mukti kendra in Chamba?
For a free first consultation inside Chamba town, the Psychiatry department at Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba, is the place to start. For a full residential programme, Chamba families usually travel to Kangra district, where Eshan Charitable Trust at Tanda Kholi offers a 180 day psychiatrist-led programme from ₹12,500 a month, and the Red Cross centres at Nurpur and Dharamshala offer free beds when one is available.
Is there a government nasha mukti kendra in Chamba?
Not a residential one yet. GMC Chamba has a Psychiatry department that treats addiction as an outpatient, and a de-addiction centre building has been proposed in Bhattiyat subdivision, with the Deputy Commissioner ordering repairs to it in September 2025. The state government said in August 2026 that Chamba is one of five districts where a new de-addiction centre is being established.
Where is the nearest free de-addiction centre to Chamba?
The IRCA Nurpur Drug De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre, run by the District Red Cross Society, Kangra, near Civil Hospital in Nurpur Chowgan. It is listed with 15 beds on the state register and has been running since 2017. The District De-Addiction Centre at Prayas Bhawan in Dharamshala is the second free option, also listed with 15 beds.
How much does a nasha mukti kendra cost near Chamba?
Government and Red Cross centres are free or nominal. Private centres in Himachal commonly quote roughly ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 a month as per our team's enquiry. At Eshan Charitable Trust the fees are ₹12,500, ₹25,000 and ₹40,000 a month depending on the room, with a one time detox charge of ₹6,000.
How far is Eshan Charitable Trust from Chamba?
Roughly 130 km by road, about four to five hours, usually via Banikhet and Nurpur into the Kangra valley. The centre is at Village Tanda Kholi near the FCI godown, close to Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda. Call before you set out and we will confirm the turning and whether a bed is ready.
How quickly can someone from Chamba be admitted?
At Eshan Charitable Trust, usually within a day or two of your first call, after a phone assessment the same day. At a government or Red Cross centre, the outpatient department is normally quick but a residential bed depends on whether one is free that week, so always ring first.
Do you take patients from Bharmour, Dalhousie, Tissa and Salooni?
Yes. We treat families from across Chamba district, including Chamba town, Bharmour, Dalhousie, Banikhet, Chuwari, Churah, Tissa and Salooni, as well as Kangra, Hamirpur, Mandi, Una and the rest of Himachal.
Is Eshan Charitable Trust located in Chamba?
No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Our centre is at Village Tanda Kholi, Tehsil and District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh 176001, about 130 km from Chamba town. We serve Chamba families regularly, but the address is in Kangra district and that is what is on our registration.
How do I check whether a nasha mukti kendra is registered?
Ask the centre for its Himachal Pradesh State Mental Health Authority registration certificate, write down the number, and confirm it with the authority in Shimla. A genuine centre will show it without hesitation. Eshan Charitable Trust holds Provisional Registration Sr. No. 193, which can be inspected at the centre.
What happens if a centre is not registered?
Running a de-addiction centre in Himachal without registering it with the state mental health authority can attract a penalty of up to ₹5 lakh, and the state has said a criminal case can be registered against the operators if a patient dies at such a centre. Please do not admit anyone to an unregistered place at any price.
Many websites show a nasha mukti kendra in Chamba. Are they real?
Some are directory listings and some are call-centre numbers for centres in other states. Ask for the full street address, the Mental Healthcare Act registration number and the psychiatrist's name, then check the address on a map. If any of the three is missing, do not go further.
Is treatment free for a family below the poverty line?
Yes at government run or funded establishments. Under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, people living below the poverty line, or who are destitute or homeless, are entitled to mental health treatment free of any charge at government run or funded mental health establishments, even without a BPL card, and essential list medicines must be free there.
How long should the programme be?
Detox alone takes about a week and only clears the drug from the body. Changing habits, thinking and triggers takes months, which is why longer programmes exist. The programme at Eshan Charitable Trust runs for 180 days in eight stages, starting with medically supervised detox.
Do you treat sharab, charas and goliyon ka nasha, or only chitta?
All of them. Chitta, heroin, smack, brown sugar, alcohol, charas, ganja, bhang, opium, doda, bhukki, tramadol, codeine syrup, alprazolam, cocaine, MDMA, injecting use and mixed use. Stopping heavy daily drinking suddenly can cause seizures, so alcohol detox should always be medically supervised.
Can we admit someone by force?
No. Admission is normally voluntary under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, and admission without consent is allowed only in limited situations after assessment by qualified mental health professionals. We do not operate a forced pick-up service. Speak to a psychiatrist about what is actually allowed in your situation.
Will people in our village find out?
Confidentiality is a right under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, and it applies at government and registered private centres alike. Ask any centre, including us, to explain its confidentiality policy before you admit anyone.
Is there a nasha mukti kendra in Chamba for women?
Not in Chamba district. Himachal's first government run women's de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, Nav Jeevan, opened at Mashobra near Shimla in June 2026, and the Red Cross Society runs a women's centre in Kullu. A second women's centre has been approved at Dr RPGMC Tanda in Kangra. Call Tele MANAS on 14416 for guidance. Eshan Charitable Trust is residential for men only.
What should we carry when we come for admission?
An ID proof such as Aadhaar for the person and for the family member admitting him, any earlier prescriptions or discharge papers, and a list of everything he is currently using, including alcohol and tablets. Being honest about mixed use matters, because it changes how detox has to be done safely.
What if he relapses after coming home to Chamba?
Relapse is common and it is not a failure, it is a signal that the plan needs strengthening. Call the centre straight away rather than waiting. Our aftercare includes follow-up calls, and families can bring him back for a shorter stay if that is what is needed.
Which number should a Chamba family call first?
If money is the main problem, call GMC Chamba on 01899-223959 and the Red Cross centre at Nurpur on 01893-221200. If you need a residential bed quickly or a long programme, call Eshan Charitable Trust on +91 62304 15581 at any hour. The free national helplines 14446 and 14416 are also open 24x7.
A Last Word
Chamba will get its own de-addiction centre. Until it does, the five options above are what a family actually has, and four of them are a few hours away rather than a few minutes. That is hard, but it is manageable if you start this week instead of next month.
Ring GMC Chamba. Ring the Red Cross at Nurpur and ask about beds. Ring us too, even if you never admit anyone here. Nobody will pressure you, and asking costs nothing.
