Quick answer

There is no government nasha mukti kendra in Manali town itself. The real government options for a Manali family are in Kullu district: the Integrated Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre at Bhuntar, which is Himachal's first Addiction Treatment Facility and runs with AIIMS support, and Regional Hospital Kullu at Dhalpur. Bhuntar has separate buildings with 20 beds for men and 15 for women, plus a daily OPD, and the Red Cross women's wing is free, including medicines and stay.

Search for a government nasha mukti kendra in Manali and most of what comes back is not from Manali, and in many cases not from Himachal at all. It is private centres in Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Delhi, running local SEO pages with "Manali" swapped into the heading and a mobile number that rings in another state. Some of them write "government approved" at the top, which means nothing.

So we went through the actual records instead: the central Addiction Treatment Facility registry, hospital sources and mainstream reporting. This is what Kullu district really has, said plainly, including the part that is missing.

This guide is published by Eshan Charitable Trust, a registered nasha mukti kendra in Kangra. We are a private charitable trust and not a government centre, we have included ourselves where relevant and labelled it, and government services change, so please confirm before you travel. Researched by the Eshan team, based on publicly available information.

The Manali Problem With Finding a Nasha Mukti Kendra

Manali is a town of about twenty thousand people that handles lakhs of visitors a year. It has hospitals, it has a busy season and a quiet season, and it sits at the top of a valley where charas has been part of the economy for decades and chitta has arrived more recently.

What it does not have is a government nasha mukti kendra in Manali of its own.

For a family in Manali, every government option means a journey down the valley. Bhuntar is roughly 50 km away and Kullu town about 40 km, which is an hour and a half to two hours on a good day, and considerably longer in tourist season when the road backs up.

That is worth knowing before you make a plan, because it changes everything about how you approach it. A daily OPD visit is not realistic from Manali. A residential admission is. And if you are going to travel anyway, the question of how far becomes a different question entirely, which we come back to at the end.

Kullu District by the Numbers

Before the list, the scale of what the nasha mukti kendra network here is dealing with.

80%

of cases at the Bhuntar addiction treatment facility involve heroin, with patients coming mostly from Una and Kangra, and from Punjab cities such as Amritsar and Ludhiana.

of only three Addiction Treatment Facilities in the whole of Himachal sits in Kullu district. The other two are at AIIMS Bilaspur and PHC Kalpa in Kinnaur.

Kullu is better covered for a nasha mukti kendra than most districts. It is also named by the state's anti-drug special task force as one of its high-risk areas, alongside Una, Baddi and Sirmaur. So the district is taken seriously at state level, and it is better served than most of Himachal. The gap is that the services sit at the bottom of the valley, not the top.

Bhuntar: The Strongest Nasha Mukti Kendra Option Near Manali

This is the most important place on the list, and most Manali families have never heard of it.

The Integrated Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre at Bhuntar launched its Addiction Treatment Facility in 2022, the first in Himachal Pradesh, in collaboration with the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre of AIIMS. It functions as a satellite AIIMS centre for drug dependence treatment. Dr Satyavrat Vaidya is the facility in-charge, and the facility was established after he specialised in addiction medicine at NIMHANS.

AIIMS supplies the restricted medicines that heroin treatment needs, through an automated inventory system, along with overdose prevention medication. AIIMS also provides the staff: a nodal officer, a medical officer, a matron, four nurses, a medical social worker and a data entry operator, with funding routed through the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Complex cases get consultation with specialists at NIMHANS in Bengaluru. The Red Cross Society provided clinical and administrative staff to get it running.

Reporting describes it as a homely environment rather than a locked one, with freedom of movement, regular family visits and accommodation for an attendant. About 80 per cent of its cases involve heroin.

Good fit if: the person is using chitta or heroin, you want proper medical treatment at government cost, and the family can manage the journey to Bhuntar.

For a Manali family this is the strongest government answer available, and the fact that it is AIIMS-supported matters. The medicines used in opioid treatment are restricted, and a centre with a real supply chain for them is doing something that most private places in the valley simply cannot.

The Free Nasha Mukti Kendra for Women at Bhuntar

Women with a substance problem in Himachal have had almost nowhere to go, which makes this one worth knowing about in detail.

Inaugurated by the Kullu Red Cross Society, it offers a free residential facility for one month, with typical admissions running 21 to 30 days. Everything is free, including medicines and accommodation. The OPD examines people from 10 am to 4 pm. Treatment is supervised by doctors and staff nurses.

Beyond detox it provides counselling for the patient and the family, vocational training, emergency referral to hospital, confidential treatment with follow-up after discharge, and outreach into schools and local organisations. Reporting as of January put it at 123 women admitted for residential treatment and more than 180 further patients treated through the OPD.

Good fit if: the person who needs help is a woman, cost is a barrier, and a one month residential stay is the right length.

If you are a family in Manali with a daughter, wife or sister who needs treatment, this is the first number to find. There is very little else of its kind in the state, and almost every private residential centre in Himachal, ours included, takes men only.

The central Addiction Treatment Facility registry lists Regional Hospital Kullu at Dhalpur as one of only three ATF sites in Himachal, providing both inpatient and outpatient services. It is a 300 bed hospital with a trauma centre, dialysis unit and cancer care unit, so there is real medical backup on the same campus if something goes wrong during withdrawal.

The hospital also hosts a District Disability Rehabilitation facility run by the District Red Cross Society, which provides mental health and drug de-addiction services alongside physiotherapy and speech therapy.

Good fit if: you need a medical assessment first, there is a physical health problem alongside the addiction, or you want the shortest government journey from Manali.

Ring the CMO office before travelling and ask two things: which day the de-addiction service runs, and whether admission is possible this week. Those two answers will save you a wasted trip down the valley.

What Is Actually in Manali Town

Civil Hospital Manali is the government hospital in town. It is where you go for an emergency, and it is where a first referral will come from. We could not verify a dedicated de-addiction service there, so we are not going to claim one.

What a Manali family can realistically do locally:

  • Use Civil Hospital Manali for an emergency, including an overdose or a seizure during withdrawal
  • Ask there for a referral to the Bhuntar facility or Regional Hospital Kullu
  • Contact the District Mental Health Programme team through the district health system, which can identify, counsel and refer
  • Ring the free helplines, which work the same from Manali as from anywhere else
  • Get the assessment done locally where possible, so that the journey down the valley is for treatment rather than paperwork
Worth knowing

Alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures and a dangerous condition called delirium tremens. It needs medical supervision, and stopping heavy daily drinking suddenly at home is genuinely risky. If someone in Manali is shaking, confused or seeing things after stopping sharab, treat it as a medical emergency and go to Civil Hospital Manali or call 108. Do not wait for a bed at a rehab.

What the Manali and Kullu Nasha Mukti Kendra Network Does Not Have

A list that only tells you what exists is half a list. Here is the honest other half.

  • No nasha mukti kendra in the town itself. Every government option means travelling down the valley, 40 to 50 km each way.
  • No long government residential programme for men beyond about a month. Bhuntar and Dhalpur can treat and stabilise. A three to six month structured recovery programme for a man is not something we could confirm anywhere in Kullu district.
  • No government halfway home. Nowhere supported to live between leaving treatment and going back to the same street, the same friends and, in this valley, the same supply.
  • Beds are limited. Thirty five residential beds at Bhuntar serve patients coming from Una, Kangra and Punjab as well as from Kullu district. Availability is not guaranteed on the day you ring.
  • OPD from Manali is impractical. A daily or weekly outpatient visit means three to four hours of travel each time, which few families sustain through a tourist season.

None of that is an argument for paying a private centre. It is an argument for going in with accurate expectations, using the free options for what they genuinely do well, and only looking further if what you need is months of residential care that Kullu cannot currently provide.

How to Spot a Fake "Government Approved" Listing

You will meet these within about thirty seconds of searching, so it is worth naming the pattern rather than pretending it does not exist.

No scheme, no number, no authority

The page says "government approved" or "government registered" but names no scheme, no registration number and no issuing body. There is no general government approval for a private centre in Himachal.

The same page for twenty towns

An identical page exists for Manali, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Dehradun and Ludhiana, with only the town name swapped. Open two and compare.

A mobile number, not a hospital number

A real government facility has a landline on a hospital or district site. A ten digit mobile with no address behind it is a lead generation page, often in another state.

No street address you could visit

Just "Manali" with no locality, no landmark and no map pin. If you cannot work out where to drive, there is nothing to drive to.

They offer to collect him

A vehicle sent to pick up a grown adult against his will is not a lawful treatment service. We do not offer it and we decline when asked.

No doctor named anywhere

Only "experienced staff" and "trained team". A genuine facility will tell you who the doctor is.

There is no blanket approval that makes a private place a nasha mukti kendra. What actually exists in Himachal is compulsory registration with the Himachal Pradesh State Mental Health Authority under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017. It carries a number you can check, and running a centre without it can attract a penalty of up to ₹5 lakh. A real government facility is either a government hospital or a named state or central scheme, like the Addiction Treatment Facility at Bhuntar. It is never an anonymous page with a catchy number.

How to Get Someone Into a Government Nasha Mukti Kendra, Step by Step

  1. If it is an emergency, stop readingUnconscious, breathing badly, fits, confusion after stopping alcohol, or any talk of ending his life. Call 108 and get to Civil Hospital Manali. That is a hospital problem, not a rehab decision.
  2. Ring 14446 firstThe national de-addiction helpline is free and will give you referral guidance for your district. One call can save a wasted journey down the valley.
  3. Get an assessment before you travelCivil Hospital Manali, or the District Mental Health Programme. Frame it to him as seeing a doctor about sleep or health, not as going to rehab. It is a much smaller yes to give.
  4. Phone Bhuntar or Regional Hospital Kullu and ask about a bedAsk three things: is a bed available, how long is the admission, and what happens after discharge. The third answer usually decides your next step.
  5. Go in person with the paperworkIdentity proof, any previous prescriptions and test reports, and a family member who can stay. Reporting describes attendant accommodation at Bhuntar, so ask about it.
  6. Plan the part after discharge before admissionA one month stay is a beginning. Work out now what the following months look like, because that is where relapse happens.

If he has not agreed to any of this, which is extremely common, that is a separate problem. Start by changing what happens at home rather than repeating the same argument, and read our guide on chitta kaise chhode and what to do when someone at home is using chitta.

For many families looking for a government nasha mukti kendra in Manali the sensible route is both: a government assessment and detox at Bhuntar or Dhalpur, then a longer residential programme if the pattern is years old and relapse has already happened once. Our breakdown of rehab centre fees in Himachal Pradesh shows what the private range really is, and our list of every government nasha mukti kendra in Himachal Pradesh covers the other districts.

Where Eshan Charitable Trust Fits, and Where It Does Not

Our founder kept seeing Himachali families selling land or taking loans for rehab fees, or sending sons to unsafe centres with no doctor where people were locked up and beaten. He set up a charitable trust with one rule: proper psychiatrist-led treatment at a fee an ordinary Himachali family can pay. Not cheap care. Real care, made affordable.

Said plainly: we are not a government nasha mukti kendra in Manali. We are not in Manali, and we are not government. We are a registered charitable trust in Kangra, close to Dr RPGMC Tanda, and we are private. If you can get what you need free at Bhuntar or Regional Hospital Kullu, do that. We say this to families on the phone and we would rather say it here too.

Where we are useful is the gap this page describes. Kullu can treat and stabilise someone in about a month. It cannot currently give a man the three to six months that follow, and that is the part which decides whether detox holds.

Distance that works in your favour

A Manali family is travelling regardless. Treatment further from the valley also means distance from the old supplier, the old friends and the old routes, which is a real clinical advantage rather than a sales line.

Nobody back home has to know

Manali is a small town in the ways that matter, especially in season. Treatment outside the valley keeps it out of local conversation.

A fee an ordinary family can pay

Residential rehab in India runs from about twelve thousand rupees a month to several lakh. We sit at the bottom of that range, as a charitable trust rather than a business.

No forced pick-up, ever

No beating, no chains, no locked rooms and no van sent to collect anyone. If someone has not agreed yet, we talk to the family instead, for as long as it takes.

Our fees, stated plainly

Shared Residential Care

₹12,500

per month, shared room, standard diet

B Caring

₹25,000

per month, deluxe room, twin sharing, upgraded diet

A Caring

₹40,000

per month, private room, single occupancy, upgraded diet

Medically supervised detox is ₹6,000 once, at admission. The treatment is identical on every plan and only the room and the diet change. Accommodation and meals, prescribed medicines, doctor and psychiatrist reviews, counselling, group therapy, yoga at 6 am, fitness, all activities and family counselling are included. Families who cannot afford ₹12,500 should still call, because we reduce fees where we genuinely can.

Questions Families Ask About a Government Nasha Mukti Kendra in Manali

Is there a government nasha mukti kendra in Manali?

Not in Manali town itself. The government options for a Manali family are in Kullu district: the Integrated Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre at Bhuntar, which runs Himachal's first Addiction Treatment Facility with AIIMS support, and Regional Hospital Kullu at Dhalpur, which is listed on the central ATF registry for inpatient and outpatient care. Bhuntar is about 50 km from Manali and Kullu town about 40 km.

Is treatment at these government centres free?

The women's centre at Bhuntar, run by the Kullu Red Cross Society, is free, including medicines and residential stay for one month. The other government facilities charge government rates, which are free or nominal, with medicines from the essential drug list. It is reasonable to ask at the counter what, if anything, you will pay before committing to a course of treatment.

What is the Bhuntar Addiction Treatment Facility?

It is Himachal Pradesh's first Addiction Treatment Facility, launched in 2022 in collaboration with the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre of AIIMS, and it functions as a satellite AIIMS centre for drug dependence treatment. AIIMS supplies the restricted medicines needed for heroin treatment along with overdose prevention medication, and provides staff including a nodal officer, medical officer, matron, four nurses, a medical social worker and a data entry operator. About 80 per cent of its cases involve heroin.

How many beds are there at Bhuntar?

Reporting describes separate buildings with 20 beds for men and 15 for women, plus a daily outpatient service. Those beds serve patients from several districts and from Punjab as well, so availability is not guaranteed on the day you ring. Phone first.

Where can a woman from Manali get de-addiction treatment?

The Integrated De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre for women at Bhuntar, inaugurated by the Kullu Red Cross Society on 29 June 2022. It has 15 beds, treatment is free including medicines and stay, admissions typically run 21 to 30 days, and the OPD sees people from 10 am to 4 pm. It also provides counselling for the family, vocational training and follow-up after discharge. This is one of very few options for women anywhere in Himachal.

How far is the nearest government centre from Manali?

Regional Hospital Kullu at Dhalpur is roughly 40 km and Bhuntar roughly 50 km by road. In normal conditions that is about an hour and a half to two hours, and considerably longer during tourist season when the valley road backs up. A daily OPD visit from Manali is not realistic, so a residential admission usually makes more sense.

Does Civil Hospital Manali treat drug addiction?

It is the government hospital in Manali and the place to go for an emergency, including an overdose or a seizure during withdrawal, and it is where a first referral will come from. We could not verify a dedicated de-addiction service there, so we are not going to claim one. Ring and ask before you plan around it.

What does "government approved nasha mukti kendra in Manali" actually mean?

Usually nothing. There is no general government approval scheme for private de-addiction centres in Himachal. What exists is compulsory registration with the Himachal Pradesh State Mental Health Authority under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017, which carries a number you can verify. Pages claiming government approval with no scheme named, no registration number and the same mobile number across many towns are almost always private centres, often in another state.

How do I check whether a centre is genuine?

Ask for the registration certificate under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017, note the number, and verify it with the Himachal Pradesh State Mental Health Authority in Shimla. Ask who the doctor is by name. Ask for a street address you could actually drive to. Running a de-addiction centre in Himachal without registration can attract a penalty of up to five lakh rupees, so a centre that will not show you the certificate is telling you something.

Can someone be admitted by force?

Admission is normally voluntary. Admission without consent is allowed only in narrow situations under the Mental Healthcare Act 2017, after assessment by qualified professionals and with legal safeguards, and refusing treatment on its own does not meet that test. A centre offering to send a vehicle to collect a grown adult is not offering a lawful treatment service. We do not do forced pick-up and we decline when asked.

How long is a government admission?

Around 21 to 30 days is typical, and the women's centre at Bhuntar offers free residential care for one month. That is enough for detox and stabilisation. The months of counselling, routine and relapse prevention that follow are the part Kullu district cannot currently provide for men, which is the honest gap in the system here.

Is charas a problem in Manali, or just chitta?

Both, and they behave differently. Charas has been part of this valley's economy for decades and tends to be normalised locally. Chitta, which is heroin, arrived more recently and causes dependence far faster, with a much harder withdrawal. The Bhuntar facility reports that about 80 per cent of its cases involve heroin. If someone has moved from charas to chitta, treat that as a serious escalation rather than more of the same.

What should we do first if someone in Manali is using chitta?

If he is unconscious, breathing poorly or having fits, call 108 immediately, because that is an emergency rather than a treatment decision. Otherwise ring 14446 for free referral guidance, get an assessment locally so the journey down the valley is for treatment rather than paperwork, and phone Bhuntar or Regional Hospital Kullu about a bed before you travel.

Is a nasha mukti kendra near me in Manali likely to be registered?

Search results for a nasha mukti kendra near me around Manali mix genuine Kullu district facilities with private pages from outside the state. Judge each one on three things: a verifiable registration number, a named doctor and a real street address. A page that cannot supply all three is not worth a phone call, however local the heading looks.

Should a Manali family look outside the valley for rehab?

Only if the free options have been tried or do not fit, and what you need is a longer residential programme. Start with Bhuntar, Regional Hospital Kullu and 14446, because they cost nothing. If a longer stay is needed, some families deliberately choose a centre further away, since distance from the old supplier, the old friends and the old routes removes triggers that willpower alone does not beat.
