Quick answer
Yes, there are government nasha mukti kendras in Himachal Pradesh, but only a few. The main ones are the psychiatry departments at IGMC Shimla and Dr RPGMC Tanda, the Red Cross de-addiction centre at Bhuntar (Kullu), the Regional Hospital Kullu, AIIMS Bilaspur, and a new women's centre in Shimla opened in June 2026. Treatment is free or nearly free. To get admission, take the person to the psychiatry OPD with an ID card, or call the national helpline 14446.
If you have searched for a government nasha mukti kendra in Himachal Pradesh, you have probably found pages that look official but are not. Many private centres from Punjab, Haryana and Jammu run websites titled "government nasha mukti kendra Himachal" with a mobile number, and families searching for a sarkari nasha mukti kendra near me call thinking they have reached a government centre.
This guide lists only real government facilities. Every entry below comes from a government website, the national Addiction Treatment Facility registry, or reports in newspapers like The Tribune and ANI. Where we could not confirm a detail, we say so.
This guide is published by Eshan Charitable Trust, a registered charitable trust in Kangra. We are not a government centre, and we have kept ourselves out of the government list. Details change, so please call before you travel.
Why Families Look for a Government De-addiction Centre
For most families in Himachal, cost is the first worry. Private rehab can run into tens of thousands a month, and luxury rehabs into lakhs. A government de-addiction centre promises doctors and medicines at little or no cost. The need is real:
The honest problem is capacity. Government beds are few, stays are short, and even the Governor has publicly questioned the lack of proper infrastructure and rehabilitation in government-run centres. Knowing exactly where to go saves families days of running around, and stops them calling a private number that only looks sarkari.

How to Get Admission in a Government Nasha Mukti Kendra
There is no online form to join a government nasha mukti kendra in Himachal Pradesh. Admission happens through the hospital OPD. Here is the process families follow:
- Pick the nearest facilityUse the list above, or call 14446 to find the closest government centre.
- Go to the psychiatry OPD in the morningTake the person with you. Most OPDs run from about 9:30 or 10 am to 4 pm. Get an OPD slip from the registration counter.
- Doctor's assessmentThe psychiatrist asks about the drug, how long it has been used, past treatment and health problems. Blood tests may be done.
- OPD treatment or admissionDepending on how serious it is and whether a bed is free, the person is either given medicines and asked to return, or admitted for detox, usually for 2 to 4 weeks.
- Follow-upAfter discharge, regular OPD visits continue. Ask the doctor about counselling and any rehabilitation centre they can refer you to.
Documents to carry
- Aadhaar card or any photo ID of the patient
- ID of the family member accompanying them
- Old prescriptions, discharge slips and test reports, if any
- Himcare or Ayushman Bharat card, if you have one, for hospital charges
- A few days of clothes and basic toiletries, in case of admission
What if the person refuses?
Adults are normally treated with their own consent. If the person refuses and is at serious risk, the psychiatrist will explain the legal options under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. Avoid any centre that offers to "pick up" someone by force. That is illegal and dangerous.
How to Spot a Fake "Government Nasha Mukti Kendra" Page
Search "sarkari nasha mukti kendra Himachal" and many results are private centres, often from other states, using words like "government", "govt approved" or "sarkari" to get your call. Some are genuine private centres. Some are not safe.
- Government facilities rarely advertise. Real ones appear on .gov.in or .nic.in websites, hospital websites and newspaper reports, not on pages full of "call now" buttons.
- "Government registered" is not "government run". Private centres must register with the HP State Mental Health Authority. Registration is good, but it does not make the centre sarkari or free.
- Check the address. If the page says "Himachal" but the address is in Punjab, Haryana or Jammu, your family member will be treated outside the state.
- Government centres do not charge monthly packages. If someone quotes a monthly fee, it is a private centre.
- No government centre offers a forced "pick-up service".
Government Centres: What Works and What Doesn't
A government nasha mukti kendra in Himachal Pradesh is a real option, and for many families it is the right first step. It helps to know what to expect.
For chitta and long-term alcohol use, detox alone is rarely enough. Most relapses happen in the weeks after discharge, when there is no routine, no counselling and the same friends are waiting. That is the gap many families struggle with.
If a Government Bed Isn't Available: Eshan Charitable Trust
We started Eshan because we kept meeting families who had tried the government route, found no bed or were discharged after two weeks, and then could not afford a private rehab. We are not a government centre. We are a registered charitable trust in Kangra, and our fees are set to stay within reach of the same families who look for sarkari care.
| Government centre | Eshan Charitable Trust | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free or nominal | From ₹12,500 a month, with help for families who can't afford it |
| Psychiatrist | Yes, in OPD and wards | Full-time psychiatrist |
| Length of stay | Usually 2 to 4 weeks | Full residential programme, up to 180 days |
| Waiting | Depends on bed availability | Admission usually within a day or two |
| Daily routine | Limited | Yoga, counselling, group sessions, outdoor time |
| Family therapy | Limited | Regular family sessions |
| Aftercare | OPD follow-up | Relapse plan, calls and visits after discharge |
Can't afford even ₹12,500? Please still call. As a trust, we look at each family's situation and offer reduced fees wherever we can. Nobody should skip treatment because of money.
Many families also use both: detox at a government hospital like Tanda, then a longer stay with us at our nasha mukti kendra in Kangra. We are close to Palampur, Dharamshala and Nurpur. See our full rehab fees guide or our list of the best rehabilitation centres in Himachal Pradesh.

Mostly yes. The Bhuntar centre offers free treatment, medicines and residential stay for up to a month, and IGMC Shimla runs a free 15-day de-addiction course. Medical college OPDs charge only a small registration fee, and some tests or admissions may carry nominal hospital charges.
How do I get admission in a government nasha mukti kendra?
Take the person to the psychiatry OPD of the nearest government facility in the morning with an ID card and any old prescriptions. The psychiatrist assesses them and either starts OPD treatment or admits them if a bed is free. You can also call 14446 to find the nearest centre.
Where is the government nasha mukti kendra in Kangra?

Is there a government de-addiction centre in Shimla?
Yes. IGMC Shimla treats addiction through its psychiatry department, the Navjeevan women's de-addiction centre opened in Shimla in June 2026, and the Himachal Hospital of Mental Health and Rehabilitation at Boileauganj handles serious mental illness.
Is there a government nasha mukti kendra for women in Himachal?

What is the national de-addiction helpline number?

Are 'government approved' nasha mukti kendras run by the government?
No. 'Government approved' or 'registered' usually means a private centre registered with the HP State Mental Health Authority. It is not free and not run by the government. Real government facilities are hospitals, medical colleges and Red Cross centres.
Can someone be admitted to rehab without their consent?
Adults are normally treated with their own consent. In serious cases, a psychiatrist can explain the legal options under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. Forced 'pick-up' services offered by some centres are illegal.
What if no government bed is available?
Ask the doctor for OPD treatment and a referral, check the next nearest government facility, or consider an affordable registered centre. Eshan Charitable Trust in Kangra starts at ₹12,500 a month and offers reduced fees to families who genuinely cannot afford it.
Is Eshan Charitable Trust a government nasha mukti kendra?
No. Eshan is a registered charitable trust, not a government centre. It offers psychiatrist-led residential treatment in Kangra from ₹12,500 a month, with reduced fees for families in financial difficulty.
